Another EV road trip so soon? HELL yes!

The local Dallas/Fort Worth ABC Television affiliate, WFAA published an article entitled on their website entitled, “VERIFY: How well does an electric car handle the grind of an epic road trip?

I (and other EV drivers I know) were appalled by the article. Several even felt that either it was a hit piece against EV adoption or the drivers that performed a 600 mile drive had little to no EV driving experience. At the conclusion of their video, one of the two guys even said to the other, “Let’s never do that again!”

Of course, Bonnie and I recently went on the Classic Bolt EV Texas Adventure Tour, in a 2020 Bolt EV, to show that you can take long trips in an EV. We haven’t even had the chance to edit all the video we shot during our trip, when the WFAA debacle occurred! Of course, I am fully prepared to hit the road again.

The route

My good friend and director of Violetcam Media, Charles Mills, will accompany me on the same route, DFW-to-Austin-to-Houston and back again, which appears to be 633 miles. The WFAA team stopped SEVEN TIMES TO RECHARGE, and took 20 hours to complete the drive. We plan to accomplish the same drive with just two stops in 15 to 16 hours.

Charles is an accomplished video director, editor, screenwriter and film critic who just happens to have owned or leased three plug-in vehicles so far: a BMW i3, a Chevrolet Volt and currently a Nissan Leaf. In fact, he and I shot a short video about our impressions regarding the BMW i3 electric vehicle, back in January 2015.

We will be driving a Bolt EV generously loaned to us (again), by Classic Chevrolet, for this purpose. The 2020 Bolt EV has 21 miles more range than the WFAA team’s Bolt EV, which was a previous model year. So yes, we have a slight advantage over the WFAA guys.

We won’t be carrying all that gear this time!

About the author

An accidental EVangelist: On my way to work at Apple one morning, my car was rear-ended (and totaled) by an SUV, driven by a guy playing with his smartphone.
This led me to get my first plug-in vehicle.
I started blogging about my experiences immediately.
A year later, in 2013, I was hired by the dealership as their "EVangelist."
I became a board member with the Texas Electric Transportation Resources Alliance (www.TxETRA.org) and perform public speaking in the DFW area regarding electric vehicles and environmental issues.
I also teach others how to sell plug-in vehicles or manage EV sales.
I'm on a mission.
