CBS 11 DFW EV news segment

Doug Dunbar, one of the anchors on the evening news at CBS 11 Fort Worth, was planning a news segment to be aired around Earth Day, part of which would be about electric vehicles. He reached out to Jerry Reynolds of Car Pro USA Radio and Jerry referred him to me.

Doug and I met, over a Zoom call, during which he asked a lot of insightful questions about the EV lifestyle. We spoke for about an hour and he said he’d let me know when the piece would air. As we were saying goodbye, I told him he wasn’t really going to fully understand everything we discussed, until he drove an EV himself. In EV sales, I call that “butts in seats.” The odds of selling an electric vehicle to the uninitiated, go way, way up, if they drive it. In my experience, a small minority of drivers get an EV due to environmental concerns alone. People primarily buy cars for status and/or the fun of driving it. Once a potential buyer experiences the silence, acceleration, cornering and just plain fun of driving an EV, they’re much more open to buying one.

Doug followed my advice and borrowed a Ford Mustang Mach-E, from a Five Star Ford in North Richland Hills. He experienced the Mach-E’s insane acceleration. Interestingly, the resulting news piece (available below) was entirely about electric vehicles.

Odd how that worked out…

About the author

An accidental EVangelist: On my way to work at Apple one morning, my car was rear-ended (and totaled) by an SUV, driven by a guy playing with his smartphone.
This led me to get my first plug-in vehicle.
I started blogging about my experiences immediately.
A year later, in 2013, I was hired by the dealership as their "EVangelist."
I became a board member with the Texas Electric Transportation Resources Alliance (www.TxETRA.org) and perform public speaking in the DFW area regarding electric vehicles and environmental issues.
I also teach others how to sell plug-in vehicles or manage EV sales.
I'm on a mission.
