I came across this shocking post on a University of MICHIGAN Law School website. It’s not shocking, due to its content. It’s shocking because it’s from a Michigan law school. You know, home of the Big 3 automakers?
I’ve been railing about dealerships failing to recognize the opportunity EVs present. Can you imagine what is about to happen? Remember HDTVs and their adoption frenzy?
Once again, I implore auto dealerships to listen to those of us who actually sold electric vehicles for a living, in a dealership setting. We have friends, still in the industry, for whom we are very concerned. The very structure of auto sales is the problem. The failure of your dealerships to profitably sell EVs is obvious and we have enumerated the changes needed to turn things around.
Let’s put it in your terms:
If a salesperson failed to move inventory profitably, for months on end, what would you do? You would fire them, right?
Now think of an OEM as a dealership and your dealership as the failing salesperson. What do you expect them to do? Do you honestly believe they will ignore the threat of China’s EVs, Teslas EVs, etc., to suit your preferences? Do you expect the public to wait for you to be able to answer your questions instead of buying from a brand that gives them what they need to make the transition? Do you expect that legislators will keep preventing direct sales or will they eventually give in to attract new factories and jobs?
