BMX stunt biking and EV awareness

I’m heading to Austin, Texas in the next few days to play “the EV nerd” in a video with BMX bicyclist, Nina Buitrago.

That seems like an odd combination, you say?

One way, to spread the word about electric vehicles, is to embed the information inside a video that will attract an audience not specifically looking for articles about the EVs.

The production, being shot in Austin, stars Nina Buitrago, a local Austin celebrity and athlete with a short appearance by me. It takes a subject appealing to many who love BMX bike stunts (bicyclists, athletes, etc) and includes a little education (in this case, about electric vehicles) in the video.

My wife Bonnie, did something like this, when our youngest daughter Zoe was quite young. Zoe loved having pizza for dinner. Bonnie wanted to make sure Zoe ate nutritionally beneficial food. So Bon would freeze vegetables, put them in a blender, effectively pulverizing them into granules and spread this over the pizza, before baking it.

Voila! They both got what they wanted, with no fuss.

Nina Buitrago is a renowned BMX cyclist who people love to watch, as she puts her bike through its paces. Nina is also an avowed environmentalist, so she agreed to use her public platform to share her love of the environment. In the video, she’ll be tooling around Austin, looking for cool places to ride her bike, while driving an electric vehicle. She’s done this before with a Nissan Leaf and this time she’ll be driving a Kia Niro, courtesy of Southwest Kia of Austin. Of course, once she finds a spot to ride, she’ll amaze us with her bike skills!

So Nina’s the pizza and I’m the veggies. Okay. I can live with that…

Early in the video, I’ll meet Nina to go over the Niro and bring her up-to-speed on its cool features and capabilities. We’ll discuss government incentives to bring the price down, fuel savings that make it easy to afford and (you know me) plenty of talk about how much fun EVs are to drive!

I’ll let you know where you can see the video, once it debuts.

Thanks to Nina for including me in this fun and important project and to Brandon Carlson of Southwest Kia of Round Rock for providing the Kia Niro!

About the author

An accidental EVangelist: On my way to work at Apple one morning, my car was rear-ended (and totaled) by an SUV, driven by a guy playing with his smartphone.
This led me to get my first plug-in vehicle.
I started blogging about my experiences immediately.
A year later, in 2013, I was hired by the dealership as their "EVangelist."
I became a board member with the Texas Electric Transportation Resources Alliance (www.TxETRA.org) and perform public speaking in the DFW area regarding electric vehicles and environmental issues.
I also teach others how to sell plug-in vehicles or manage EV sales.
I'm on a mission.
