Six years ago today, I started my “Journey,” by leasing a 2012 Chevy Volt. It was my first plug-in vehicle and I was so smitten, I started this blog, within the first week of ownership. Little did I realize then, that driving a plug-in vehicle would so fundamentally change my life.
Before I got that Volt, I had many questions about owning a plug-in vehicle. Many of those same questions are still being asked today by potential buyers of plug-in vehicles. Obviously, the industry hasn’t done a very good job of educating the public.
Since that day, my journey has included:
- My wife leasing a Volt, 59 days after I did, replacing her Toyota Highlander Hybrid SUV.
- Learning how to install a new electric circuit (two 240V circuits for Level 2 chargers)
- Appearing in my first video on a GM Volt site
- Acquiring two Level 2 chargers.
- Shooting a video, showing how iPhones interface with the 2012 Volt (Thank goodness this is SO much better today!)
- Participating in my first radio interview.
- Taking my first long-distance trip in my Volt…to the Chicago Auto Show, as a member of the media.
- Meeting G. Michael Murphy, who founded the Chevy Volt Owners group on Facebook.
- Seeing my first solar powered airplane
- Selling our dream home and building a smaller, more efficient home.
- Working for Green Mountain Energy, selling electricity, generated by renewable energy sources.
- Celebrating “National Plug-In Day” by helping my dealer sell Chevy Volts.
- Changing careers to sell Volts at my Chevy dealership.
- Checking into getting solar panels on our new home.
- Successfully selling my first plug-in vehicle (to a reader who knew me from my blog!)
- Fighting my HOA to get solar panels (and losing)
- Getting an electric lawn mower
- Adding additional electric lawn equipment
- Acquiring our 3rd Volt for our daughter.
- Getting my first vanity license plate.
- Attending the Detroit Auto Show to see the 2nd generation Volt and the prototype of the Bolt EV
- Qualifying for the first time for GM Mark of Excellence
- Almost getting scammed into buying a preowned Tesla Model S
- Discovering no gas-powered car can win me over.
- My wife getting her 2nd Volt.
- Qualifying for a 2nd year for GM Mark of Excellence
- Acquired my 2nd Volt
- Selling the idea of “Electric Avenue” to the owner of my dealership.
- Finally getting solar panels for our home!
- Qualifying for the third time for GM Mark of Excellence
- Opening the EV & Hybrid Sales Center, AKA “Electric Avenue.”
- Being interviewed on Car Pro Radio.
- Driving through a huge wind farm in Texas
- Being interviewed by the “What Drives Us?” auto podcast
- Being interviewed by “Wards Automotive”
- Summarizing the performance of our solar panels over the first year.
- Qualifying for the fourth time for GM Mark of Excellence
- Becoming a board member of the Texas Electric Transportation Resource Alliance (TxETRA)
It has been a heck of a ride so far! You’ve been a part of my journey by reading my blog. I’m looking forward to watching the world of electric transport change and grow, over the coming months and years and to sharing my journey with you.
Thanks for your visit!
Can you show the used Volt/Bolt inventory too on your Volt/Bolt inventory spreadsheet above? Thanks.
The preowned lot is a couple miles away, preventing me from keeping up-to-date on their inventory.
What’s the best website for searching local dealer inventories, particularly for pre-owned Volts? Thanks.
Probably cars.com
Congrats on all the years pushing for EVs!
We need more dealers like Classic that take electrics seriously.
When does the 2019 start arriving? My wife wants to test drive one back to back with the Model 3 so she can make her final decision.
I think the first 2019 Volts will arrive in October/November.
