Oops, it’s POOP!

What happened to Arstechnica??? MORE FEAR! UNCERTAINTY! DOUBT!

SHAME ON ARSTECHNICA! You used to be better than this.

Once you read this, you’ll see it for what it really is, NOT an article about tire manufacture, but an article warning you off electric transportation.

MY FAVORITE BS QUOTE: “If you’ve owned an EV for a couple of years, you’ve certainly changed your tires twice.” Pure crap.

Oh, the horror! NOT! I’ve been driving electrically for over 9 years with ZERO increased frequency of tire changes. Electric motors have amazing acceleration/torque, but just like gas-powered sportscars, if you can’t keep the pedal OFF the metal, you’ll burn through tires. Just common sense.

MY FAVORITE DUMB QUOTE: “But that situation is complicated by the fact that EV drivers like to mash the throttle from the traffic lights.” WOW, JUST LIKE A CORVETTE… OR PORSCHE… OR ANY OTHER HIGH PERFORMANCE VEHICLE. I WONDER IF WE’LL EVER LEARN HOW TO DRIVE THEM WITHOUT RUINING THE TIRES???

BTW: If you were almost fooled by this article from arstechnica and started worrying about tire replacement costs, just remember, EVs do NOT have the following items to maintain:

  • Oil and oil filter
  • Transmission and transmission filterSpark plugs
  • Timing chain/belt
  • Piston rings
  • Fan belt
  • Intake or exhaust valves
  • Fuel injectors or carburetors
  • Exhaust systems, including catalytic converters (which have become a hot item for thieves)
  • Engine air filter…and there are even more savings
  • AND, when you realize an EV gets the dollar equivalent of between 80-120 miles per gallon.

Before they start stirring this pot, I’ll also mention that the battery packs typically have an 8 year / 100K mile warranty (at a minimum), so no need to worry about replacing that for a VERY long time, if ever. Battery packs are already lasting longer than the vehicles, in many cases. One famous Chevy Volt went 475,000 miles on it’s original battery pack.

MY FAVORITE REVEALING QUOTE: (from the LinkedIn profile of the person who shared this article on LinkedIn): “Dr. Bradley is one of the foremost proponents of the free-market in the United States. His experience at ENRON

About the author

An accidental EVangelist: On my way to work at Apple one morning, my car was rear-ended (and totaled) by an SUV, driven by a guy playing with his smartphone.
This led me to get my first plug-in vehicle.
I started blogging about my experiences immediately.
A year later, in 2013, I was hired by the dealership as their "EVangelist."
I became a board member with the Texas Electric Transportation Resources Alliance (www.TxETRA.org) and perform public speaking in the DFW area regarding electric vehicles and environmental issues.
I also teach others how to sell plug-in vehicles or manage EV sales.
I'm on a mission.
