Plug-in vehicle adoption in Texas

***NERD ALERT***

More adventures in data analysis of the Clean Cities Texas plug-in vehicle (PHEV & EV) adoption map!

The average month-over-month increase in plug-in vehicle registration in Texas is 3.6% (52.2% annually). Which models (that have achieved at least 1,000 units sold) are beating this average consistently? I’m glad you asked! They are listed below my observations.

Interesting points about month-over-month increases:

BMW i4Cadillac Lyriq and Toyota BZ4X have NEVER slipped below 10% month-to-month growth.

BMW iX and Lucid Air have ALWAYS beaten the average.

The Ford F-150 Lightning has NEVER slipped below 10% growth, BUT it is on a downward spiral since February 2023 (supply chain or consumer preference?)

The Ford Mustang Mach-e has averaged 7.8% over the entire 27 months of reported data. That’s about 146% per year!

The GMC Hummer has averaged 108.3% per month, BUT the increase from the first month’s sales to the 2nd was 1,800%. Even if that anomaly is deleted, its average increase is 14.6%

Every Hyundai fully electric model exceeds the average monthly increase percentage.

Jeep has two plug-in vehicles and they have both beaten the average, BUT the monthly percentage increase of adoption for both are dropping quickly.

Every Kia fully electric model, except for the Soul EV exceeds the average monthly average increase. The Soul has had negative growth for 14 of the most recent 18 months, as it is rumored to be discontinued next month.

The Lincoln Corsair PHEV is above the average but growth, as of late, is falling.

Mercedes “EQ” models are all increasing by at lease 7X the average, but the hybrid models are fading away. It seems their buyers are moving past hybrids and embracing BEVs.

The Nissan Ariya has consistently performed at 4X the average for 10 of the last 11 months.

Despite a strong beginning, the Polestar 2, averaging 2X the overall average month-to-month increase, appears to be slipping for the last 8 months.

Rivian‘s delivery vehicle and pickup have averaged 10X the market average. The SUV is over 20X the market average growth.

Although Tesla dominates the market in unit sales, the only model exceeding the average consistently is the Model Y, at about 1.8X.

Like the Model Y, the Volkswagen ID.4 has averaged 1.8X the average, albeit at about 5% of the Model Y’s unit sales volume.

The Volvo C40 RechargeS60 Plug-in, XC40 Recharge and XC60 Plug-in are all above average in monthly increase, but the XC60 seems to be falling behind the others while selling around 850-980 units per month. (The other Volvos are selling at about 1/4 to 1/2 that pace.
