Ready for the cross country trip!

Road Trip!Well, it’s Chicago Auto Show week and I’ve been packing for the trip. In the next week, I’ll put over 2,000 miles on my Volt. Only about 160 of those miles will be on electricity and the rest will be on fossil fuel. Although I’m not very excited about that, I think the EV Challenge will get some good data out of it.

I’m going to meet new friends along the way and hopefully see some old friends in Chicago. I’m looking forward to the media dinner and Henrik Fisker’s presentation on the way forward for his beleaguered company. I’ll finally get to see the Cadillac ELR and Tesla Model S with my own eyes.

If you want to track my progress, in real time, download the Find My Friends app for your iPad or iPhone and request buzzsmith@mac.com. Privacy notice: It’s a two-way street, if you can track my location, I can track yours… I will hopefully be posting progress updates to this page and my blog.

All in all, a pretty good week, but I’m sure going to miss these 72 degree days in Texas! The ForecastOne thing I did, to prepare for the trip, was check the Blink app for charger locations along my route. I thought I would show preference to restaurants that had a Blink charger. This came as a shock:BlinkMap

All I have to say is: Really, Oklahoma and Arkansas? REALLY???

CarStationsI found an app that purports to locate all kinds of charging stations, not just Blink. It’s called CarStations and it’s free (and it has found chargers for me in Oklahoma). They also have a website you can use to locate charging stations. It’s kind of funny that I was thinking of selecting restaurants, along my route, as most of the chargers I’ve found are at Nissan dealerships! I doubt they’d like to see my Volt pull into their charge bay…

About the author

An accidental EVangelist: On my way to work at Apple one morning, my car was rear-ended (and totaled) by an SUV, driven by a guy playing with his smartphone.
This led me to get my first plug-in vehicle.
I started blogging about my experiences immediately.
A year later, in 2013, I was hired by the dealership as their "EVangelist."
I became a board member with the Texas Electric Transportation Resources Alliance (www.TxETRA.org) and perform public speaking in the DFW area regarding electric vehicles and environmental issues.
I also teach others how to sell plug-in vehicles or manage EV sales.
I'm on a mission.
