September 2016 Sales Numbers

In September 2016, the plug-in sales results were mixed. The Tesla Model S has been coming on strong, up 200% over August’s sales (which was a 45% increase over July’s sales).

Here are the September 2016 sales figures, compared to the previous month:

  • Chevy Volt: DOWN 2% (2,031 vs. 2,081)
  • Nissan Leaf: UP 23% (1,316 vs. 1,066)
  • Plug-in Toyota Prius: UP 200% (4 vs. 2)
  • Tesla Model S: UP 39% (4,350 vs. 3,125) **estimated
  • BMW i3: DOWN 61% (391 vs. 1,013)
  • BMW i8: UP 9% (158 vs. 145)
  • Ford Fusion Energi: UP 16% (1,652 vs. 1,422)
  • Ford C-Max Energi: DOWN 3% (689 vs. 707)

In September, the average price of gasoline was almost unchanged, at $2.21 per gallon, in the U.S. It dropped, until about the 12th of the month, until it bottomed out around $2.18. After that point, it began rising, with a few minor drops, for the remainder of the month, finishing at $2.23 per gallon.
September EV Sales Numbers

September started slowly for me, with only three sales in the first six days. However, the sales pace started to pick up, in the second week, ending the month with six and one-half sales for the remaining three weeks of September.
My Sales by Month

Vehicle Sales by ModelMy sales, by vehicle, included one Volt and one Silverado 1500, keeping the Volt lead of one unit over the pickup. I’m pretty pleased with that. I also sold a couple Corvettes, one of which was a Z06.

Plug-in sales, compared to the same month a year ago, were evenly split. The Prius, BMW i3 and i8 as well as the Ford C-Max Energi were all down, with the Prius only selling 4 units. Tesla year-over-year numbers once again reflect a sizable increase in sales. Surpassing Tesla’s sales jump were the Chevy Volt and the Ford Fusion Energi, both with over a 100% increase over sales a year ago.

  • Chevy Volt: UP 114% (2,031 vs. 949)
  • Nissan Leaf: UP 6% (1,316 vs. 1,247)
  • Plug-in Toyota Prius: DOWN 98% (4 vs. 216) *this was down 99% last month.
  • Tesla Model S: UP 74% (4,350 vs. 2,500) *this was up 140% last month.
  • BMW i3: DOWN 77% (391 vs. 1,720)
  • BMW i8: DOWN 12% (158 vs. 182)
  • Ford Fusion Energi: UP 104% (1,652 vs. 808)
  • Ford C-Max Energi: DOWN 4% (689 vs. 719)

An accidental EVangelist: On my way to work at Apple one morning, my car was rear-ended (and totaled) by an SUV, driven by a guy playing with his smartphone.
This led me to get my first plug-in vehicle.
I started blogging about my experiences immediately.
A year later, in 2013, I was hired by the dealership as their "EVangelist."
I became a board member with the Texas Electric Transportation Resources Alliance (www.TxETRA.org) and perform public speaking in the DFW area regarding electric vehicles and environmental issues.
I also teach others how to sell plug-in vehicles or manage EV sales.
I'm on a mission.
